On May 21, 2026, our dear friend Anthony "Tony" Martinelli passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a community of family, friends, former students, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched through his kindness, creativity, and generosity.
For 33 years, Tony inspired students as an art educator at Salem City Schools, encouraging them to embrace their creativity and see the world through an artist's eyes. He was a mentor, a builder, a lifelong learner, and a compassionate soul who devoted himself to helping others. Those who knew Tony remember not only his talent and dedication, but also his genuine warmth, curiosity, sense of humor, and unwavering friendship.
Outside the classroom, one of Tony's greatest joys was spending time in Mill Creek MetroParks. Living near the Park, he hiked its trails nearly every day. The forests, streams, wildlife, and changing seasons provided him with peace, inspiration, and a deep connection to nature. Whether walking alone in quiet reflection or sharing the trails with friends, the Park was truly one of his favorite places.
To honor Tony's life and create a lasting tribute to his memory, we hope to lease a memorial bench in Mill Creek MetroParks—a place where visitors can pause, reflect, and enjoy the natural beauty that Tony cherished so deeply.
Our goal is to raise $2,500 to cover the cost of the memorial bench lease and commemorative plaque for 20 years. Every contribution, no matter the amount, will help create a meaningful place where Tony's memory can continue to inspire others.
For those of us who loved Tony, this bench will be more than a place to sit. It will be a reminder of a life well lived—a life dedicated to art, education, friendship, family, and the simple joy of walking in nature.
Thank you for helping us honor Tony's legacy and preserve a place where his spirit will remain part of the landscape he loved.
"What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us."
