It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of Judy Ann Ramos, 83 years old, of Canfield. Judy died peacefully, with her children at her side. Although she lost a long and arduous battle with cancer, she passed into the hereafter with all the dignity and grace she so much deserved and wanted during the morning of November 13, 2024. She was reunited with her loving husband Lewis, eternally together sharing in God’s great reward.
Judy was born on October 29, 1941, in Youngstown, daughter of the late Vid and Sophia Labozan.
Judy spent her younger childhood years on Youngstown’s north side, and then the family moved to the west side when Judy was in junior high.
She was a graduate of Chaney High School Class of 1959. She then went on to further her education and was enrolled in training at Youngstown Hospital Association’s South Side Hospital, where she obtained her radiologic technologist certification. She then worked in South Side Hospital’s X-Ray department.
She married her husband, Lewis, on December 26, 1966. For the next several years, they moved around the country as Lewis was reassigned to different air bases – Lowry AFB in Denver, Colorado; Vandenberg AFB in Lompoc, California; and Eielson AFB in Fairbanks, Alaska. Upon his honorable discharge in 1970, they returned to the Youngstown area to raise their family.
After returning to the Youngstown area, Judy worked at Youngstown Osteopathic/Cafaro Memorial Hospital for the next 25 years in the X-Ray and CAT Scan departments. After the hospital closed, she finished her career at Cavalier Mobile X-Ray in Boardman. She developed cherished lifelong friendships with many of her coworkers from South Side and Cafaro.
Judy was passionate in her pursuit of the domestic arts, and always took great pride in maintaining her home to the highest standards. She was an excellent cook and followed in the footsteps of her Mother, Sophie, and Mother-In-Law, Milagros, in preparing her famous signature dishes and desserts. She loved to entertain family and friends and hosted countless holiday parties and events at her home. Her pies and pastries were famous in her family and amongst her circle of friends. Judy instilled in her children a love of cooking and in the creative arts. She was accomplished in needle point, knitting, and crewelwork. She loved the arts and music. She would often attend concerts and musical events with her sisters and nieces and husband. Judy loved to hear her grandsons play music for her on the piano or on their stringed instruments.
Judy, along with her husband Lewis, was a life-long supporter of Youngstown State University Athletics. She and Lew were present at every home football and basketball game, and they would also travel with their “crew” to away games. She loved hosting her tailgate parties for their many friends. Judy enjoyed racquetball in her younger years, and then she took up golf and enjoyed going on the course with her lady friends for their weekly round at short holes.
Judy enjoyed socializing with family and friends, attending community activities and also spearheading group breakfasts and reunions for her Chaney classmates.
She enjoyed the outdoors and worked tirelessly in keeping up her yard and tending to the flowers with her husband. Judy loved wildlife and was an avid birdwatcher. She was a mother not only to her children but also their many household pets over the years. She fostered a love of nature and respect for the environment that is carried on by those around her. Judy was also interested in astronomy, and enjoyed stargazing and observing celestial events, and shared this with her children and grandchildren.
Above all, Judy loved her husband, children, and family. She valued hard work and strived for perfection in all that she did. She will be remembered for her commitment and dedication to her loved ones and in every cause that she supported. Judy was a lifelong member of St. Christine’s parish in Youngstown, and with her husband Lewis, brought up their children and celebrated the sacraments throughout all of their lives in the church. She contributed her time in the CCD office at St. Christine’s and in the Women’s Renewal Programs.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Mary Lou Marshall; brother, Walter Labozan; nephew, Michael Grimm; and her husband of 57 years, Lewis. She leaves behind her daughter, Brigitte (Stephan Koknat), of Powell, Ohio; son, Jason, of Lakewood, Ohio; a granddaughter, Gabrielle Koknat, of Columbus, Ohio ; three grandsons - Evan Koknat (Lexi), of College Station, Texas; Aiden Koknat, of Cincinnati, Ohio; Noah Koknat of Columbus, Ohio; her sisters, Zora Grimm and Helene Mavar; her brother, Joseph Labozan (Beatrice); brother-in-law, David Ramos (Theodora); and sister-in-law, Jacqueline Trgovac; as well many beloved extended family members, nieces and nephews, and dear friends.
